The movie begins at an animal shelter, where a girl named Penny adopts a puppy whom she names “Bolt.” Five years later, Penny receives a frantic call from her father; he is being kidnapped and neither of them are safe, however, she can rely on Bolt to protect her because her father has modified him, giving him various super powers—heat vision, super strength, super speed and stamina, and a “super bark” that unleashes a shock wave. Penny and Bolt set out to save Penny’s father from the clutches of the evil Dr. Calico and are involved in a lengthy, action-packed chase scene where Bolt exhibits his various abilities.
It soon becomes clear to the audience that the previous scene was not real but simply the shooting of a scene for a television series. However, Bolt’s actions toward Penny when the cameras are off, as well as a conversation the director has with the set crew and a representative from the network, make it clear that Bolt does not realize that he is an actor; he thinks that the perils that he and Penny face, and his super powers, are all real. Meanwhile, Penny, feeling guilty about leaving Bolt by himself all weekend, pleads with her agent to let her take the dog home for the weekend, since he never gets a chance to be a normal dog. Penny’s agent, however, brushes off her concerns and whisks her away for a photo shoot.
During the next session of filming for the series, the episode ends on a cliffhanger with Penny being kidnapped by Dr. Calico. Bolt becomes frantic, believing that Penny actually has been kidnapped. Penny expresses her concerns to her agent, guilty that Bolt will be so worried about her. Again, the agent brushes her off. When an animal trainer takes Bolt to his trailer, Bolt, bent on “rescuing” Penny, breaks out of the trailer and begins tearing around the studio, trying to find her. While attempting to break through a window, Bolt instead crashes into it, gets knocked unconscious, and falls into a box that is then shipped to New York City.
In New York, Bolt wakes up and escapes from the box and begins running wild in the city, searching for Penny. Several times, he attempts to use his super powers; given that they were in the first place just special effects, they unsurprisingly no longer work, much to Bolt’s confusion. After Bolt is forced to stop when he gets his head caught in a fence, he talks to some pigeons; they point out that Bolt has Styrofoam packing peanuts from the box stuck to his body. Bolt concludes that Styrofoam is his weakness (like Kryptonite is to Superman), and that this is why his powers no longer work. Bolt then tells the pigeons that he must find a cat to talk to so he can find out what Dr. Calico is planning.
Vindictively, the pigeons take Bolt to Mittens, an alley cat who has been extorting food from pigeons for protection. Bolt attempts to interrogate Mittens, who has no idea what Bolt is talking about. However, when Bolt threatens to drop her from a bridge into oncoming traffic, Mittens frantically pretends to know where Penny is, and, upon seeing that Bolt’s collar gives his address as being in Hollywood, shows Bolt Hollywood on a map and tells him to find her there. To Mittens’ horror, Bolt then tells her that he will not release her until he gets Penny back, and ties to two of them together using a leash he obtained while running around the city. Bolt and Mittens hitch a ride on a truck that they believe is headed for Hollywood.
Back in Hollywood, Penny is shown printing out “Lost Dog” posters, obviously distraught that Bolt is missing. Her agent shows up with a dog who looks and sounds exactly like Bolt, however, when “Bolt” responds to a trainer with a clicker, Penny realizes that the dog is not Bolt but a look-alike. Penny is unwilling to work with the fake Bolt, but when the network representative pleads with her to continue filming because otherwise people will lose their jobs, Penny sadly agrees.
Meanwhile, in the truck, Mittens engages Bolt in a conversation about his superpowers in an attempt to distract him while she searches for a weapon to use against him. She grabs a bat and attempts to hit him with it; she ends up knocking over a box and spilling Styrofoam peanuts all over Bolt. Bolt panics and jumps out of the truck, dragging Mittens with him. Bolt experiences real pain and hunger for the first time and acts confused, much to Mittens’ chagrin. Realizing that they’re at an RV campground, Mittens teaches Bolt how to beg and act cute for food. They then meet up with Rhino, a hamster in a ball who is a huge fan of Bolt and, like the dog, believe that the show and Bolt’s powers are real. Rhino volunteers to join them on their journey, despite Mittens’ protests.
Rhino suggests that they hitch a ride on a train, an idea which Bolt approves of but terrifies Mittens. Right before attempting to jump on the train, Rhino mentions seeing Bolt on the “magic box.” Mittens abruptly realizes that Rhino is referring to the TV and is now positive that Bolt doesn’t really have any powers. She attempts to tell Bolt this, however; he and Rhino jump before she can finish her sentence. Unsurprisingly, the attempt does not go well and the three are nearly killed, winding up dazed and sore in front of a house. Mittens climbs up a tree and yells at Bolt, telling him that he doesn’t have any super powers. Bolt angrily refuses to believe her and threatens to Super Bark her out of the tree if she doesn’t come down. Mittens ties a knot in the leash and refuses. Bolt attempts to Super Bark at her; when it doesn’t work, Mitten taunts him. However, while Rhino runs off to go get a ladder, Bolt and Mittens are captured by an animal control officer.
Bolt attempts fruitlessly to get out of the officer’s car; Mittens again tells him that he doesn’t have super powers. Rhino helps Bolt escape, a feat which he believes he does on his own using his super strength. When Rhino reveals that he was the one who saved him, Bolt is crushed, realizing that Mittens was right and he actually doesn’t have any super powers. Rhino tells Bolt that they must go rescue Mittens, and when Bolt doesn’t want to—believing that he can’t—Rhino lifts his spirits by telling Bolt what a hero he is to other animals.
Together, Bolt and Rhino break Mittens out of the Animal Shelter, and the three continue their journey toward Hollywood. Along the way, Mittens teaches Bolt how to act like a regular dog (including drinking out of the toilet, fetching, digging, and sticking his head out the car window). The bond between the three becomes noticeably more stronger and friendly. Eventually, when they reach Las Vegas, Mittens surprises Bolt with a home she set up for them. Bolt tells Mittens that he’s not staying; he has to keep searching for Penny. Mittens gets angry and tells him that his entire life was fake, and that includes Penny; she’s just an actress who was pretending to love him. When Bolt denies this, Mittens goes on an emotional rant about humans that reveals that she was once a housecat who was abandoned by her family; they moved away and left her, alone and declawed, to fend for herself. Bolt still refuses to believe that Penny was acting the whole time, to which Mittens angrily tells Bolt to leave. Bolt wishes her the best and goes off on his own. Later, Rhino wakes up and asks Mittens where Bolt went, she lies and tells him that Bolt said that he had to go face Dr. Calico on his own. To this, however, Rhino is just as adamant as ever to follow him, explaining that it’s a time like this that Bolt needs his friends the most. The two set off to find him again.
Bolt, meanwhile, has made his way back to the soundstage in Hollywood. He sees Penny hugging and acting affectionate toward the fake Bolt and believes that Mittens was right, and Penny never really loved him. Heartbroken, Bolt leaves the studio. However, seconds later, after the director calls “cut!”—revealing to the audience that her actions toward the fake Bolt were a rehearsal for a later scene—Penny breaks down, telling her mother that she misses Bolt. Mittens, who has snuck into the studio by now (along with Rhino), witnesses this, and goes off to find Bolt.
While shooting a scene for the TV series, the fake Bolt get scared by one of the extras and runs off the stage, knocking over some decorative torches. The entire stage soon goes up in flames, and in the chaos, Penny becomes trapped.
Mittens catches up with Bolt outside and attempts to explain to him what she saw. Bolt suddenly hears the fire and, worried about Penny, runs off to rescue her. Bolt rushes into the burning set and is reunited with Penny, who is overjoyed to see him. Bolt attempts to guide Penny out of the building through a vent, however, Penny soon collapses (presumably from smoke inhalation), unable to continue. She urges Bolt to save himself but he refuses to leave her side. Remembering a trick Rhino used earlier in the movie, Bolt “Super Barks” into the vent; the fire fighters outside hear the barking and, following the sound, are able to rescue Penny and Bolt. Both are quickly placed in an ambulance to be taken to the hospital, with Mittens and Rhino hitching a ride. While in the ambulance, Penny’s agent begins to talk to Penny’s mother about how they can milk the incident to increase Penny’s fame; disgusted, Penny’s mother kicks him out of the ambulance and tells him, “We quit!”
The Bolt TV series continues on with a new “Penny” and a new “Bolt,” however, the series seems to have jumped the shark with a storyline about aliens that even Rhino finds ridiculous. Meanwhile, the real Penny adopts Mittens and Rhino, and she and her mother move to a rural home to enjoy a simpler, happier lifestyle with their pets.

Once upon a time there was a charming tale of a wee little mouse with wide-open eyes and ears as large as saucers. Named Despereaux Tilling, the mouse grew up, though not by much, to become a reader of books and the besotted friend of a lovely human princess named Pea. In time he saved the day, battling an army of rats, and won the hearts of millions of readers and eventually a contract with a Hollywood studio. This is how the book “The Tale of Despereaux: Being the Story of a Mouse, a Princess, Some Soup, and a Spool of Thread” became a computer-animated movie, though without the rambling subtitle and as many eccentricities.

There’s a nuttier, generally more diverting entertainment creeping, crawling and waddling along the edges of “Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa” than the larger one lollygagging on screen. This central story of this new animated movie, written by Etan Cohen and the directors Eric Darnell and Tom McGrath, involves Alex (Ben Stiller in low gear), a lion who in 2005 journeyed from New York captivity (i.e., a zoo) to the jungle in the first “Madagascar” with the usual mix of celebrity-voiced racial and ethnic stereotypes: a motor-mouthed zebra, Marty (There’s a nuttier, generally more diverting entertainment creeping, crawling and waddling along the edges of “Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa” than the larger one lollygagging on screen.
